EDi started business in 1988 with one press, a shear, a complete one man tool and die shop and a 5000 square foot facility in Shakopee. At that time Jack, Linda and Vicki Engel were running the business doing every thing from running the press, delivering parts to cleaning the shop. Michelle and Kristine helped out when they weren't working another full time job and going to school.

In the early 90's, the Highway Department notified the Engels that a new bypass was going to be put in over their property. They were going to be bought out necessitating a move. In the fall of 1991 they relocated to a 15,000 square foot building in Jordan, MN. As the business continued to grow, they added a 15,000 square foot building onto the same property in 1996. Jack added the first large hydraulic press at this time. Eventually adding the 600 ton press to expand their services to deep drawn stampings.

Due to customer request, they continued to expand the business into tube bending and fabrication. With this addition it became necessary to add another 15,000 square feet to the second building. EDi crrently occupies 45,000 square feet and provides metal fabrication, tube bending, welding and assembly as well as metal stampings.

Don Hayward, the current president of EDi joined them in May of 2006. Don worked for many years for Minnesota Technology before joining EDi

Early history of the Engels:

Joachim (Jack), was born in 1938 in Vienna, Austria. The family of 8 girls and 3 boys, (yes, you read it right, 11 children in all) moved to Stuttgart, Germany. Jack undertook his apprenticeship for tool and die while in Germany.

Jack met his wife Gerlinde by corresponding through the mail for a year and half as pen pals. Jack biked 150 miles to meet Gerlinda for the first time near a lake. Murphys law was in full force, they were each waiting for the other on opposite sides of the lake and never did meet. The next time they set up a meeting, Jack was able to put together enough money to take the train, this time being more specific about the meeting place.

Gerlinde, worked at a childrens home run by the City of Munich. She was born and raised in Bavaria.

In 1959 Jacks father decided to move his entire family to the United States, ending up in Minnesota. Jack worked for D & O Dies in Bloomington, part time for United Steel and took English classes at night. When United Steel moved to Montgomery, MN, Jack joined with his brother to form J & E Manufacturing, another tool and die shop. Jack left J & E to start Engel Diversifed Industries Inc, with his wife, and three daughters.
